The Challenge

The Permian produces one of the world's most complex produced water streams.

Permian Basin produced water is among the highest-TDS, most complex oilfield water in the world — routinely measuring 100,000–250,000 mg/L total dissolved solids. That's 3–7× saltier than seawater. Until recently, the only economically viable option was injection disposal.

As disposal capacity tightens and regulatory pressure mounts across Texas and New Mexico, operators are facing a fundamental question: what do we actually do with this water when the disposal wells fill up?

Colorado's regulatory trajectory makes this an even more acute question for the DJ Basin. The state's produced water regulations are evolving toward higher recycling mandates and potential surface discharge pathways. PWR saw this coming and built the technology to answer it.

Colorado's produced water recycling mandate currently targets 1% reuse. Industry projections — and regulatory signals — suggest that number moves toward 20–30% over the coming decade as water scarcity, seismic activity from disposal, and environmental policy converge.

At <600 mg/L TDS, PWR's treated water meets agricultural irrigation standards — the key threshold for surface discharge permitting. The technology already exists. The economics are already validated. What remains is scale.

Raw Produced Water Intake

Raw Permian produced water enters the system directly from production. No pre-treatment required. The system handles high-TDS, high-temperature produced water from active wells — 100,000+ mg/L TDS input documented in the pilot.

Primary Solids & Oil Removal

Multi-stage primary separation removes suspended solids, residual hydrocarbons, and oil & grease. Automated chemical dosing adjusts in real time based on incoming water quality. No manual batch operations.

Advanced Desalination Stage

PWR's patented desalination process reduces TDS from the Permian's characteristically extreme levels to below 600 mg/L in continuous operation. The system maintains stable output quality across variable input conditions — the key challenge that prior approaches couldn't solve.

Real-Time Quality Monitoring

Continuous inline monitoring tracks TDS, conductivity, pH, and key ions throughout the treatment train. Output water quality is verified before discharge or reuse. All data is logged for regulatory documentation and process optimization.

Treated Water Output

Final effluent at <600 mg/L TDS — meeting USDA agricultural irrigation standards. Suitable for crop irrigation with native soils, demonstrated in the Permian pilot. This is the threshold for Colorado surface discharge permitting as regulations evolve.
